Unearthed in the fortress of Erebuni (modern day Yerevan), the inspiration behind the Shield of Argishti necklace was once the bronze shield of King Argishti I, who reigned in the 8th century BCE. The shield is adorned with concentric circles of lions and bulls, intentionally designed so that none ever appear to be upside-down. The cuneiform inscription bordering the shield reads, "May Argishti, son of Menua, be protected by Haldi."
